3D. It’s coming. Whether you like it or not, it is definitely coming (you know, unless you can only see properly through one eye). This December marks the arrival of cinema’s second coming. JC brings Avatar to us unwashed masses (although until Tron Legacy is out, who actually cares about this 3D thing?).
Sony boss Sir Howard Stringer has announced that the company will be pushing 3D into Sony TVs, Blu Ray players and the Playstation 3 by next years end, “The 3D train is on the track, and we at Sony are ready to drive it home.” How very nice of them. Sky Broadcasting have already announced their intention to launch a 3D service next year and Channel 4 will be hosting a season of 3D shows, albeit in budget red-and-blue-o-vision, by the end of this year. Contrary to popular belief 3D TVs are being developed to work without the need for glasses so the sooner everyone clams up about that issue the better. I’ve seen one demoed and at the moment they are kind of impressive and kind of a bit rubbish, undoubtedly they will be improved upon.
This is all very good but do our precious games need 3D?
Hell yes! I’ve compiled a short list of games that 3D would make rock.
Wipeout HD

This one is blindingly obvious, in part due to the fact that Sony already demoed this in 3D earlier this year at CES. The obscene speed not enough for you? Try bombing it down Modesto Heights in reverse at phantom speeds while bullets and bombs fly past you.
Zone Mode is already visually arresting. Now you can watch your favorite music’s sound wave travel in 3D as you try and beat Zico.
Wipeout isn’t the only racer that would benefit. Burnout, anyone? Take down an opponent and watch as their burning wreckage flips over your car and towards you. Twisted metal everywhere.
Rock Band

You already look stupid playing with all those plastic peripherals so what’s another pair on your face going to do? Hit the notes as they come toward you, watch the crowd as they go wild. Shame you can’t crowd surf.
flower

I couldn’t resist. It would be crazy. The game looks stunning already; the petals, the grass, the flowers…that’s pretty much it. Swooping in and out of the landscape would be made even more blissful.
Soul Calibur

You’ve seen that Star Wars chess thing in ‘A New Hope’. You’ve always thought it would be awesome if chess was actually like that. You’d get the same effect with Soul Calibur but without all that deep long term strategy bogging you down. Xianghua getting on you nerves? Ram her into the floor and watch as her legs flail helplessly. Does it add to the gameplay? No. Does it look cool? Yes.
Uncharted

This could pretty much go for any third person game to be honest. Another game that looks fantastic as it is but with it’s quick switching between shoot outs and platforming, a 3D makeover wouldn’t be a bad fit. Watch as debris flies and grenades go off. Explore ancient temples from a totally new view. Some of the arguably best done cutscenes could be give a little more bang.
So is 3D really a good edition to gaming? I suspect so although maybe 3D is done and dead…
Are there any other games you’d like to see 3D’d up?

I should have listed Mirror’s Edge. I’d love to see that flaccid wench’s brain splatter against the white walls of that utopian city she oh so hates in 3D.
